The New Mosque is an Ottoman Imperial Mosque in the locality of
Eminonu, Turkey.
It is located on the Golden Horn in south end of Galata Bridge. The
Yeni Cami mosque is one of the popular sights in Turkey. It was
specially constructed by Safiye, mother of Sultan Mehmet III last
1597 and since then this mosque was formally the Mosque of the
Valide Sultan.
The initial construction of the mosque hauled on for several decades
due to funding problems and seeping of water.

It
was completely suspended when Safiyes’ son died; she was no longer
the Queen Mother so she no longer had the revenues and powers to
continue the project. After the six sultans, Turhan Hattice, the
Queen Mother of Sultan Mehmet IV took up the work and completed it.
The mosque was called Valide Sultan’s Mosque. Inside the mosque, you
will find wealth of gold, marble and colored tiles. It overlooks the
harbor beside the Galata Bridge on the Golden Horn. Its stunning
outdoor consist of patio, two slender minarets, and a cascade of
domes falling down from a central dome and mausoleum yard. The
mausoleum that was named after Hattice Turhan Sultan rest five
sultans and they are Hattice Turhan Sultan, Mehmed IV, Usman III,
Mustafa II, Ahmed III and Mahmud I. The mausoleum is the biggest
graveyard of the Ottoman court since numerous members of the Ottoman
court also rest in here.
The complexes of the mosque which are formed by the gathering of
buildings, soup-kitchens for the poor, schools, hospitals, baths,
bazaars and markets etc., show architectural unity which fulfill
numerous needs of the society when it comes to social or cultural
needs. These complexes were sufficient to the policy of the Ottomans
for expansion. The New Mosque is a testament to the antiquity of
Turkey that a mosque built for three centuries ago is still know as
New Mosque.
