Patara was later renamed as Arsinoe. Patara is known by its
prosperous marine life and marketable city on the south-west coast
of Lycia on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey near the modern small
town of Gelemiş, in Antalya Province.
Patara is today identified
with ancient ruins at the village of Gelemish on the mountainous SW
coast of Asia Minor and lies about 10 km (6 mi) E of the mouth of
the Xanthus (Koca) River. It served as a port of call for ships from
Italy, Egypt, Syria, and other places, and it was the primary harbor
for cities along the Xanthus River valley.

St Nicholas ("Santa
Claus") was born here, but visitors usually go to Patara , tro
freshen up in the longest beach as well as enjoy the sand-covered
ruins of the St Nick's Roman town.
How to go to Patara
Traveling to and from Patara is not very common. There are little
buses to Fethiye that travels 75 minutes, a travel to Kalakan for 20
minutes and 45 minutes in Kas.
Patara’s Beaches
Patara beach is located at 18 km. It is the longest beach in the
region with a width of 200-300 meters. It’s the sand is soft and the
sea is shallow. The beach was set under protection by the
environmentalists due to the fact that sea turtles used to place
their eggs in Patara beach.

At its Eastern-most peak there is a rocky protrusion appearing over
a magnificent rocky bay. In Leake’s Asia Minor, there is a theatre
that was built in the supremacy of Antoninus Pius, which has a
diameter of 265 feet and 30 rows of seats. Ruins of Thermae is also
found, which represents the ancient Patara.

What’s Interesting in Patara
St. Nicholas, better known as Sanata Claus is born in here and
spends his entire life in the close by town of Myra (Demre). Apollo
is also born here, according to myths. Patara was a very prosperous
city of trading and recognized as one of the six principal cities of
Lycia. A huge ruined of Apollo, was found on the hill outside the
City Gate, that serve as an evidence of the existence of an Apollo
Temple which has not been yet found.
Night Life in Patara
Patara is built with a handful of committed bars, along with which
is the Gypsy Bar. This bar has live music on Monday, Wednesday and
Saturday.
