THE CULTUREL FESTIVALS OF MARMARA

The Marmara region has a wealth of festivals to
entertain the locals and travelers.
The Istanbul International Film
Festival had its beginnings in 1982 as part of the International
Istanbul Festival. It featured six movies and was dubbed Film Week.
It has grown since then into a separate event with a larger scope
and has become recognized by the International Federation of Film
Producers. It occurs in April.
The 1915 Sea Victory Celebration is head March 13-18. The location
is Canakkale situated on the Asian part of the Strait of the
Dardanelles. This victory was won against the allied powers during
WWI. The European Jazz Days also happens in Canakkale during March.
The Tulip Festival in Istanbul takes place during April. While many
people think that tulips are original to Holland, they actually
originated in Turkey. During this time millions of tulips show their
lovely heads. The festival is held in different parks in Istanbul,
but the main one is Emirgan Park.
The Whirling Dervishes Festival happens in December in the Museum of
Mevlana in Konya. The dance is 700 years old. It is done to
commemorate the Sufic saint Mevlana. The belief of the Sufis is that
dance was created when the universe began.

The Kafkasor Art and Culture Festival in June celebrates folklore
and art. Folk dancing, bull wrestling, and hand-to-hand combat
wrestling are part of the festivities.
The Aspendos Festival features operas and ballets performed in
Antalya at the Aspendos Antique Theatre, which holds twenty thousand
attendees. The amphitheater is 2000 years old.
In Istanbul in July the Bosphorus, which is a festival takes place.
It consists of an Asia-to-Europe contest that consist of rowing,
swimming, and sailing; the national Olympic Committee of Turkey
organizes the festival. People from around the world participates.
These are just a few of the festivals in the Marmara region. |
