The regal Imperial Sultan Ahmet Mosque is located in Istanbul across
from the Hagia Sophia. This mosque has six soaring minarets. The
inside is paneled with blue and white tiles from Iznik, thus it is
also known as the Blue Mosque. Mehmet, the architect designed and
built it between 1609 and 1616. A light and sound show is held
during the summer months.
The Selimiye Mosque of Edirne was commissioned by Sultan Selim II
and built between 1558-1574 and its architect was Mimar Sinan. He was a
chief Ottoman architect and in his eighth decade when he designed
this mosque. The mosque is part of a complex and it is located in an
outer courtyard that surrounds the complex. The courtyard portico is
designed in a floral pattern. It contains the largest domes and the
highest pencil minarets in existence.
The Lüleburgaz Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque Fountain, which was built
between the years of 1539 and 538 by Mimar Sinan on the command of
Sokollu Mehmet Pasha is a grand example of the decorative and
exquisite marble craftsmanship from the Classical Ottoman period.
The Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque has twenty-two rooms. The roof of
the fountain is done in the Baroque style used during the Sultan
Mahmut II reign.
Orhan Gazi Mosque was built in 1339 and 1340 by Orhan Gazi.
Karamanoglu Mehmet Bey destroyed parts of it in 1413. Bayezid Pasa
made repairs to it in 1417 by order of Çelebi Sultan Mehmet. It is
located in Bursa. It is an earlier Ottoman building of great
importance. It is a great example of the Ottoman culture with its
attendent buildings of medrese, bath , mosque, soup kitchen, and
inn.
There are many other fascinating, artistic, and historical mosques
to see in the Mamara region such as: The Rustem Pasha Mosque in
Tekirdag, Sulemaniye Mosque, Bayazid Mosque, Fatih Mosque, Eyup
Sultan Mosque in Istanbul... and the Cedi Ali Pasa Mosque in Basaeski.
