One of the best places
that Altinkum is proud of is the Temple of Apollo at Didyma. This is
an important religious place in ancient Ionia. The large temple is
dedicated to Apollo and called Didymanion. Didymanion is one of the
greatest ocular temples in existence; second only is the one located
in Delphi Greece. The earliest sanctuary of this temple was built in
8th century B.C and after Alexander the Great outdone the Persians
in 334 B.C., cities in Ionia reclaimed their independence and work
was begun in reconstructing the Temple of Apollo.
The columns of the
temple are still standing and the double row of columns that
surrounds the temple was covered over with a marble roof as was
before the temple proper. Its courtyard was the site of the archaic
period temple. A small temple was also built here during the
Hellenistic period to dwell the bronze statue of Apollo.
The surrounding walls of the temple are decorated with Gryphon. The
Temple of Apollo is an excellent example of architecture during the
time of Graeco-Roman era. The whole area of this temple is a sign of
grandeur in art and culture of the place. Another major ancient site
that you can find here in Altinkum is the vast Roman ruins in
Ephesus.
It houses one of the seven churches being referred to in
the Book of Revelation of the Bible. It is also a place of a large
graveyard of the Gladiators. This archeological site is one of the
most favorite international and local attractions partially owning
its accessibility from Adan Menderes Airport and via port of
Kusadasi.
